a friend indeed
Hello there. These are 19th Century glass buttons, aren't they pretty? They are resting on a lovely drawn threadwork cloth in just the shade of green that I love..
..you can see a bit more of it here and the corner of a lovely piece of lace - its actually a collar/dressfront which I can't wait to use on something. Here, also, is a lovely old tin of buttons...
..these lovely things were my christmas present from my friend Jo, and one of my most favourite christmas presents ever. It's such a thoughtful present, but also it just feels a bit less cynical, or wasteful a present, at a time of year when it can feel a bit like that when buying gifts, especially when you leave it until the last minute and panic buy! I suppose I like it because the things are vintage and 'recycled' if you like (not that I don't appreciate the other 'bought' presents I recieved), and I'll be 'recycling' them into something else as well and that feels positive and creative. I'd love to buy everyone vintage gifts - but I don't think they'd all appreciate it! Without wanting to sound like a really sad person, I don't have a great deal of friends, and Jo is my only really close friend - because it's important to me that a close friend really understands me, and Jo does, which makes this gift all the more touching.

Dear Christine, I don't have a lot of friends either - never have in fact - and my two best friends live nowhere nearby any more. But, they GET me and I GET them, and to me that's the most important thing in our relationships. I used to feel sorry for myself but I don't seem to do that as much any more. Maybe it's because I joined the blogging community which has opened up my world emormously. Anyhow, I understand what you were saying and I rejoice that you have such a special friend as Jo.
It would be wonderful if everyone appreciated vintage and/or handmade, but I suppose that is too much to expect in this flawed world of ours. We will just have to appreciate those that do and make them special things.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your crafting with us, I'm sure the world is a better place for it.
Cheers!

The buttons are a lovely present and one which I'm sure you will put to good use! What a great friend you have.I'm lucky enough to receive vintage buttons from my dad as frequent gifts! Other people think it's a bit odd but I don't care.Have fun breathing new life into them.

The gift you have shown is is lovely in its sentiment - such a good friend is hard to come by. The buttons are so beautiful. I am particularly fascinated by the silver colored ones as they don't look like glass at all! So pretty.

Just remember, its not the quantity of your friendships, its the quality.
I have only a small handful of people I can really count on as friends. You know, those people you could call in the middle of the night and their first question would be "What's wrong" not "Why did you wake me up".

What a wonderful, thoughtful present. It is so much fun when friends understand you and what you treasure. Rest assured, if you lived nearby, I would be honored to be your friend. I too, am in the quality vs quantity group on friendships. True friends get you and are an extension of your family. Have a great day. Cheers.

It's great to have a true friend who really understands you warts and all - not that I'm sure you have warts....you know what I'm trying to say.
Buttons are lovely.

Hello,
I just came across your blog, and I really like your pictures and your posts. Those buttons are lovely!
The must be a lot of work and energy to move, but how nice that you get to decorate a new place.
I wish you a nice evening!
